8 Tips for Winter Skin

 

Winter is upon us in the southern hemisphere, and when we are covering up in layers of clothing it is often easy to forget about your skin.

Covered up or not, it is important to care for the health of your skin all year round. The winter weather can be harsh on skin; and whilst it is not as exposed to the sun, salt and sand of summer; it is subjected to cold temperatures, harsh winds and lack of moisture. These conditions can lead your skin to become dry, flakey and rough. If the condition of your skin deteriorates this can encourage unwanted wrinkles, ageing and poor circulation.

This blog highlights some of the things that you can keep in mind this winter to ensure that your skin remains soft, hydrated and nourished, and of course recommends a date with me!

 

  1. Avoid Wet Clothes

Wearing wet socks, gloves or clothes can encourage bacteria and also lead to itching and irritated skin. If you happen to get caught in the rain this winter, try to change clothes as soon as possible or attempt to dry out your clothes.

  1. Slip, Slop, Slap

Whilst it may not be warm outside, your skin is still exposed to harmful UV rays. Wearing sunscreen, especially on your face, can help to reduce the effects of UV rays on your skin and avoid further complications such as a skin cancer. I recommend a facial moisturiser or foundation that contains SPF protection.

  1. Exfoliate

More often than not, it is easy to forget exfoliating as part of your skincare regime. However, your skin is a living organ that sheds dead skin cells and sweats out what is harmful to your body. If you do not exfoliate your skin regularly, dead skin cells can build up and harbour nasty bacteria or block your pores. As a result, skin conditions such as eczema, acne or infections can develop.   1. Moisturise

By regularly exfoliating your skin, it is much better able to absorb additional skincare products such as moisturisers. Moisturising is a skincare necessity throughout winter to provide your skin with much needed hydration and to help reduce dry, cracking skin. My products all nourish your skin with natural oils such as coconut and grapeseed oil which will provide a much needed moisturising layer after your shower or bath. You can then choose to add another moisturiser for added softness or opt for a natural body oil if your skin is extra dry.

  1. Hydrate

Drink, drink, drink – water of course! Whilst you may not feel as dehydrated as you would in the summer months, it is essential to consume up to 8 glasses of water per day. Your body requires water to function at its best, and often if water is lacking then your skin becomes the last organ that your body focuses on nourishing. As a result, your skin can look a little worse for wear. Carry a drink bottle around or keep a water jug by your desk to serve as a reminder to drink water.

  1. Avoid free radicals

Free radicals are harmful molecules within your body that can multiply and consume healthy cells, leading to illness and disease. These free radicals can wreak havoc on your body and the unhealthier you become, the worse your skin health gets. Aim to reduce the amount of free radicals that enter your body by avoiding smoking, drinking alcohol, inhaling chemical fumes (household cleaning products, petrol etc), and unhealthy foods (take-away, high fat foods, high sugar foods, soft drinks). Ensure that you are eating nutritious meals on a regular basis and exercising for up to 30 minutes daily.

  1. Ban Hot Baths

In the early mornings or freezing cold nights of winter, a hot shower or bath often provides comfort. However, having your shower or bath temperature too hot can actually dehydrate your skin and cause dryness. It is best to keep your water at a stable warm temperature and aim to reduce your time spent in the shower or bath to ensure that your skin doesn’t dry out.

  1. Consider a supplement

If you find that your skin is looking dry and rough despite your best efforts to look after it, you may want to consider a supplement to help support your skin’s health. There are a number of natural supplements on the market for this purpose, including ‘Swisse Ultiboost Hair, Skin and Nails’.
