So it’s 2018, and guess what? Coconut oil is still a big deal. This magical elixir isn’t going away any time soon – in fact, our love for it just keeps growing. The best news – it features in almost every single one of my natural products!

Coconut oil is one of those all-purpose ingredients that can be used in just about any situation. It’s fondly referred to by many as ‘the Tree of Life’ and it can make you feel better in a myriad of different ways, both inside and out. It’s an amazing source of healthy fats like lauric acid - which helps lower cholesterol and boost metabolism. It also contains antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties make it a great natural remedy for everything from dandruff to bleeding gums.

You might already be using coconut oil for your hair, your face, your teeth and as a staple in your diet, but are you using it on your skin, as well? If not, you should be, because there are endless benefits to doing so. Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and it’s also one of the ways our body rids itself of toxins (along with the kidneys). When we slather ourselves from head to toe in questionable products that might contain more toxins than we’re aware of, it can cause much more harm than we’d like to believe.   1. As a moisturiser

Coconut oil has a high composition of saturated fats, which makes it the perfect replica for our skin’s natural barrier. It works by trapping in moisture, so the best way to utilise this is by applying it right after a shower when your skin is still nice and supple. Whether your dry skin is caused by dehydration, stress, exposure to damaging elements or nutritional deficiencies, coconut oil will be able to penetrate deep into the layers of skin, where it’s easily absorbed and can start working its magic.   1. For makeup removal

The skin around the eyes is the most fragile of the whole body. When we’re using and removing eye make-up everyday, the pulling, rubbing and general wear and tear can cause wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of aging. But coconut oil is one of the most gentle, inexpensive makeup removers on the market. The thickness of the oil means it works even on the heaviest makeup looks, and it can even remove waterproof mascara with ease. Simply dab some onto a clean fingertip and massage the oil gently over your closed eyelids and lashes, then wipe with a cotton pad.

Coconut oil is reported to be highly effective on certain skin disorders like acne, psoriasis, eczema and even Athlete’s Foot. This is all thanks to its ability to reduce inflammation, fungal infections and other harmful microbes that can wreak havoc with our skin. Coconut oil contains agents such as monolaurin and monocaprin, which can help protect the body from various skin disorders and the painful, irritating side effects that come with them. The best way to do this is to shampoo your hair, then massage a few tablespoons of melted coconut oil into your scalp. Wrap a warm towel around your hair once you’ve covered the entire scalp (you can simply heat the towel up in the microwave for around 30 seconds), and leave it on for at least half an hour. The longer you can leave it on, the better it’ll be. Rinse the coconut oil out (it might take a while, so be patient!) and comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb. Doing this at least once a week will assist you in properly moisturising your scalp and getting rid of your dandruff problem.

Coconut oil can prevent and reduce signs of aging like dull skin, dryness, large pores, fine lines and sagging skin. How To Prepare Your Skin For Summer

Summer is just around the corner for my southern hemisphere ladies, and that means endless days of sunshine, relaxing and fun. However, the change in weather can affect how your skin looks, so there are some key ways to ensure that you are looking after your skin in the lead up to summer:

  1. Drink Plenty of Water

By now it’s common knowledge that you should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day. Our bodies are made up of over 70% water so it is crucial that you are replenishing your body with water, especially during warmer days where you may be swimming, sweating etc. Keeping hydrated also helps to improve the wellbeing of your skin and help to reduce the signs of ageing.

 

  1. Cleanse Your Face Twice A Day

It is recommended that you wash and cleanse your face every morning and night. This ensures that you are washing away any dirt, sweat or bacteria from throughout the day and also during the night. Opt for a cleanser that contains natural and gentle cleansing ingredients and is free from sulphates, parabens, cocamide DEA, synthetic fragrance or colours and synthetic preservatives. A natural cleanser will reduce the likelihood of adding toxic chemicals to your skin that can encourage skin conditions. You should also be cleansing, or washing, your body at least once a day with a natural cleansing body wash.   1. Moisturise Your Face & Body

After cleansing and exfoliating, your skin requires additional rehydration in the form of a moisturiser or serum. The type of moisturiser that you use may depend on your skin type, for example, you may opt for an oil free product if you have oily skin or you may opt for a cream moisturiser or body/facial oil if you have dry skin. My Sweet Orange & Lavender Body Lotion or two hydrating Body Oils are the perfect way to nourish your whole body following a shower and are a great way to give your skin added moisture throughout the warmer weather.

 

  1. Change Your Pillow Case

How often do you change your pillow case? Each night the oil, sweat, and bacteria from your hair, neck and face can get absorbed into the fabric of your pillow case. Over time, these nasties continue to build up and if not changed regularly, your pillow case can provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria on your face as you sleep. This may be a reason that you experience acne or breakouts in certain areas of your face. I recommend changing your pillow case every 3 days, especially in summer when you are more likely to encounter warm nights.

 

  1. Avoid stimulants

A diet full of stimulants such as coffee, sugar and processed food can wreak havoc on your skin health. Coffee can dehydrate you and cause your skin to appear dull and dry. Excess sugar can also lead to pimple breakouts, blackheads and other skin conditions. Try to limit the amount of sugary and processed foods that you are consuming and opt for more healthy options that will digest slowly such as wholemeal bread/pastas, crispbread with healthy fats such as avocado, vegetables with quinoa or cous cous. Also try to drink caffeine free tea, mineral water or water with a slice of lemon or fruit rather than coffee, to ensure your body and skin remain hydrated.

 

  1. Slip, Slop, Slap with Suncreen

It is important to wear sunscreen both in the leadup to warmer weather and during the summer months. Even on days that appear overcast or cloudy, the UV rays can be strong and still burn or damage your skin. With prolonged unprotected sun exposure, your skin can appear to be dry, wrinkled, or develop age spots or potential melanomas. Sunscreen with 50+ SPF rating is often recommended and will help to protect your skin throughout the summer, and there are many more natural options available. You might also find products such as body lotions or face foundations that have a sunscreen component added.

Buff away and moisturise dry skin

The primary purpose of using my body scrubs is to provide a gentle exfoliation for your skin. My sugar and sea salt assist in buffing away dead and dry skin, leaving your skin feeling softer and more hydrated. The nourishing plant based oils in my body scrubs, such as coconut oil and grapeseed oil, leave the skin with a moisturising layer after you rinse that will help to keep your skin hydrated and feeling oh so soft.
