The Top 4 Tips for Protecting Your Skin this Change of Season

 

Seasonal changes can have an effect on your skin, and the upcoming season – autumn – is often considered the worst for breakouts. This is because your skin produces more oil during the summer months, but as the seasons change the cooler air encourages layers of dead skin to form. This build up traps sebum and bacteria underneath the skin’s surface, increasing the risk of pimples and acne breakouts. And since the skin is such an important part of the body (did you know it’s the body’s largest organ?), you should take care of it all year round. Here are the best things you can do to keep your skin sweet and supple this season!

1.   Exfoliate

Exfoliating should be a large part of your skincare routine already, and if it’s not, then now is definitely the time to introduce it. Exfoliating is the removal of all the dead skin cells that lie on the outer layer of the skin. It’s an important process, because it helps encourage brighter, healthier skin all over the body. It can also aid in the revival of aging skin and help stimulate better collagen production.

Having a consistent exfoliating routine all year round is highly beneficial, but it’s especially important in the colder months. This is because humidity levels drop and the cool weather can dry the skin out even further, leaving behind a bigger build up of dead skin cells than usual. Exfoliating doesn’t only remove this added build up, it also helps to increase circulation of the blood which can promote that gorgeous, healthy glow in your skin.

It’s best to exfoliate 2–3 times a week with a gentle, all-natural product. Over-exfoliating can be equally as damaging as failing to do it, especially if you use products that have nasty chemicals and additions in them like microbeads (which are terrible for the environment and banned in many countries!). If you’re new to exfoliating, look for one that is aimed at sensitive skin, so it’s less harsh and abrasive. 2. Cleanse

Washing your skin everyday is critical to keeping it clean and healthy. As you go about your day, your skin can come into contact with all manner of different irritants and pollutants like dirt, pollution, air conditioning and the weather. If all of that sits on our face and body, it deprives our skin of oxygen and can encourage free radicals to form, which is when fine lines, pimples, breakouts and dry skin can occur.

In autumn and winter, these issues can be exacerbated by the dry, cold air. Cleansing once a day helps you to keep your skin squeaky clean, by removing impurities and boosting hydration and blood circulation. It will also prevent production of excess oils that can add to further breakouts and skin issues.

There are so many different kinds of cleansers available on the market, so it’s important to find one that is best suited for your skin type. If you’re usually prone to dry skin, avoid anything with alcohol in it as that will dry your skin out even further. If you’ve got oily skin, a cleanser with a lower pH level can help balance production of oil, and for those with sensitive skin, avoid anything heavy in fragrance or other additives. 3. Moisturise

Well, this one is just obvious! Moisturiser is your best friend all year round, but especially during the colder months. It is the best way to take care of any feelings of dry, flaky and tight skin. When the weather hits those lower temperatures, your pores can shrink quite dramatically in order to protect your skin from the elements. This can make it more difficult to remove the dirt and oil, and dehydrates the skin even further.

Replenishing that loss of moisture and keeping your skin well hydrated is a great way to promote healthy skin and make you feel good. For the best results, choose a rich, creamy moisturiser filled with natural ingredients. Avoid extremely hot showers (which might be hard to do when it’s so cold!) as this will only dry your skin out more, and apply your moisturiser after you’ve cleansed, when your skin is still damp. 4. Stay Sun Safe

Sunlight is important for healthy skin because it provides us with vitamin D, which is essential for a number of things like healthy bones and even better moods. But even though summer might be over, don’t make the mistake of putting away your sunscreen! The sun’s harsh UV rays, while not as nasty as they are during the hotter months, can still be damaging in autumn. Even if the day is overcast and the clouds are heavy and thick, almost 80 percent of UV rays can still get through.

When those rays come into contact with the skin it can penetrate the skin layers, causing sunburn and killing or damaging skin cells. This can cause a wide range of damage, all the way from early aging signs to skin cancer. Using sunscreen on your face, neck and body is the best way to counteract potential damage, as well as wearing a hat, sunglasses and covering up when outdoors.

While sunscreen used to be quite thick and pore-clogging, it’s come a long way over the years and has been formulated for everyday use. It can promote healthy skin by protecting essential proteins like collagen, elastin and keratin, and can ward off early signs of aging. How To Prepare Your Skin For Summer

Summer is just around the corner for my southern hemisphere ladies, and that means endless days of sunshine, relaxing and fun. However, the change in weather can affect how your skin looks, so there are some key ways to ensure that you are looking after your skin in the lead up to summer:

  1. Drink Plenty of Water

By now it’s common knowledge that you should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day. Our bodies are made up of over 70% water so it is crucial that you are replenishing your body with water, especially during warmer days where you may be swimming, sweating etc. Keeping hydrated also helps to improve the wellbeing of your skin and help to reduce the signs of ageing.

 

  1. Cleanse Your Face Twice A Day

It is recommended that you wash and cleanse your face every morning and night. This ensures that you are washing away any dirt, sweat or bacteria from throughout the day and also during the night. Opt for a cleanser that contains natural and gentle cleansing ingredients and is free from sulphates, parabens, cocamide DEA, synthetic fragrance or colours and synthetic preservatives. A natural cleanser will reduce the likelihood of adding toxic chemicals to your skin that can encourage skin conditions.   1. Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliation is a skincare step that many people often neglect, yet it is an important way to remove dry & dead skin, bacteria, dirt and sweat. By exfoliating your skin, you are able to remove dead skin and toxins, making way for new and nourished skin.   1. Moisturise Your Face & Body

After cleansing and exfoliating, your skin requires additional rehydration in the form of a moisturiser or serum. The type of moisturiser that you use may depend on your skin type, for example, you may opt for an oil free product if you have oily skin or you may opt for a cream moisturiser or body/facial oil if you have dry skin.   1. Change Your Pillow Case

How often do you change your pillow case? Each night the oil, sweat, and bacteria from your hair, neck and face can get absorbed into the fabric of your pillow case. Over time, these nasties continue to build up and if not changed regularly, your pillow case can provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria on your face as you sleep. This may be a reason that you experience acne or breakouts in certain areas of your face. I recommend changing your pillow case every 3 days, especially in summer when you are more likely to encounter warm nights.

 

  1. Avoid stimulants

A diet full of stimulants such as coffee, sugar and processed food can wreak havoc on your skin health. Coffee can dehydrate you and cause your skin to appear dull and dry. Excess sugar can also lead to pimple breakouts, blackheads and other skin conditions. Try to limit the amount of sugary and processed foods that you are consuming and opt for more healthy options that will digest slowly such as wholemeal bread/pastas, crispbread with healthy fats such as avocado, vegetables with quinoa or cous cous. Also try to drink caffeine free tea, mineral water or water with a slice of lemon or fruit rather than coffee, to ensure your body and skin remain hydrated.

 

  1. Slip, Slop, Slap with Suncreen

It is important to wear sunscreen both in the leadup to warmer weather and during the summer months. Even on days that appear overcast or cloudy, the UV rays can be strong and still burn or damage your skin. With prolonged unprotected sun exposure, your skin can appear to be dry, wrinkled, or develop age spots or potential melanomas. Sunscreen with 50+ SPF rating is often recommended and will help to protect your skin throughout the summer, and there are many more natural options available. You might also find products such as body lotions or face foundations that have a sunscreen component added.

The Natural Body Wash You Need In Your Shower

Do you give much thought to the body wash that you have in your shower? Do you often just grab whatever is on sale and under $5? Well, it’s time to start thinking differently about your body wash and my Activated Charcoal & Peppermint Body Wash is all that needs to be on your mind.

Many popular and low cost body washes contain ingredients that are better left off your skin. The most common of these is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and is a synthetic surfactant which provides the soapy suds as you wash. Similar variations of SLS are Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) and Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate (ALS). These surfactants are inexpensive and that's why they are used in everything from body washes, to toothpaste to engine degreasers. These sulphates can cause irritation to the skin in high doses over prolonged periods, so take a squiz at your body wash and if you see one of these ingredients listed then it might be time to part ways with this product.

Phenoxyethanol is also a popular preservative in skincare. Many companies claim that this is a natural preservative, however it is known as a nature identical preservative where it has been made synthetically to mimic the structure of a naturally occurring substance, in this case green tea.

It is also common for body washes to contain artificial colouring and fragrance. These ingredients are often made synthetically and can contribute to skin irritation.
