5 Essentials for the Ultimate Self-Care Sunday



No one is protected from stress. Even your toughest-looking friend probably screams into a pillow when no one is around. We are humans and aren't made to be Zen masters naturally, so managing your emotions & wellbeing is a skill you can learn.

Of course, you can always binge-watch Netflix and eat pizza, but there is a better way to cope with negative emotions.  As a substitute for a day in bed, I want to share with you my go-to self-care routine to replenish your energy. Here are five self-care practices to reboot your system:

 

1. Treat Yourself to a Delicious Meal

Whether you prefer cooking at home or dining out with friends, it is a must to indulge in a nice meal at least once a week. Do not think about diets and caloric intake -- it is okay to let go of restrictions every now and then.

Think about what foods remind you of family, special moments, happiness or any other positive emotions and warm your soul. Such a treat will help you kick off your Sunday and set the right mood for the rest of the day.

 

2. Get Out In Nature

If the weather is cooperative, stretch your body and reconnect with nature. In Japan, people practice "forest bathing" to improve health and stress-resistance.

It is proven that spending time in a forest can reduce stress, depression and hostility. If outdoor exercise is not your jam, consider other activities you could do out in nature like have a picnic or lay outside on the grass and watch the clouds. An ambient music playlist will help you unwind and appreciate the time spent outdoors.

 

3. Do a Spa Treatment at Home

5. Stay Away from Electronic Devices and Go to Bed Early

Have you heard of blue light's negative effects on sleep? Blue light is ommited from devices like computer and phone screens and actually causes out body to produce more melatonin (the hormone that controls sleep). So, the more you look at devices before bed, the more melatonin is produced and keeps your brain alerted, making it hard to fall asleep.

If you struggle to sleep at night, try not to use electronic devices two hours before bed. Rather than wasting your time on social media, get a book you have always wanted to read. Reading will prepare your brain for healthy eight-hour sleep.

 

Ward Off Monday Blues with the Ultimate Self-Care Sunday

No one says that it is easy to be calm and grounded. Inner peace takes time to achieve. To ward off stress and negative emotions, dedicate time every week to nurture your mind and body. Perhaps 'self care sunday' can be your weekly reminder.

At first, it might feel weird and unnatural, but practice makes perfect. At some point, your self-care routine will become an integral part of your life. You will see how choosing mindfulness over passive entertainment gets easier every time.

5 Reasons To Switch To Natural Skincare

We all understand the effort (and money) involved when you have a solid skincare routine in place. You cleanse, tone, moisturise, apply various oils and perhaps even serums and acids. Plus your cupboard of face-mask products is enough to make Kylie Jenner swoon. Sure, they might not all be made from natural ingredients, but why would that matter? What could possibly be worth up-heaving your skincare arsenal and making the switch to natural?

Well, I’ll be the first to tell you right now that making the swap to natural skincare is one of the best things you could do for yourself, and here are my top 5 reasons why…

 

1. Higher Standard Ingredients

The beauty industry is a huge market, worth billions of dollars every year. Despite this, the ingredients are surprisingly unregulated for such a powerhouse industry, and there is little in the way of policing what goes into our skincare products. It really comes down to the integrity of the skincare companies themselves, and the consumers own research.

In Australia, cosmetics are regulated by the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS), that places much-needed parameters around what our local cosmetics businesses can and cannot put in their products. And while they do a great job of regulating what goes into our cosmetics, there are still many synthetic and potentially toxic ingredients that can be found in the most harmless looking products.

By choosing skincare products with all natural ingredients, you can ensure that you’re not lathering synthetic or replicated ingredients on your biggest organ and instead are making use of the pure and beneficial properties that come from our plants.

 

2. Better For The Environment

Remember when microbeads in skincare were all the rage, before we found out the damage these tiny beads were doing to the environment once they were washed off our faces and down our drains? Sure, microbeads sounded great in theory but they were essentially little balls of plastic used to exfoliate your face & body. Once washed off, they’d go on to live forever in our oceans causing pollution and endangering the sea creatures who live there. It’s no surprise this harmful ingredient is now banned.

Even if you don’t use microbeads, do you know what your skincare is made from? It may contain other synthetic and potentially harmful ingredients that get washed down your drain into our waterways and eco-systems. By choosing products with natural ingredients, there is less chance of impacting the environment and animal species.

You can even take this one step further and consider the packaging your skincare comes in. Is it recyclable or biodegradable, or will it simply take up a little more space in landfill once you’re finished with it? All of my packaging comes in recyclable packaging so you can ensure they will be disposed of appropriately – or perhaps you can even reuse them! My jars make a great trinket holder.

 

3. Safer For Your Skin

You probably know that your skin is the largest organ in the human body, yet you may not focus on what you put on top of it as much as you should. Consumers love eating organic, healthy, unprocessed foods, but it’s so important to place that same healthy emphasis on what goes on your skin as well. Treating your body like a temple (as you should!) shouldn’t just include a healthy interior. Your exterior deserves the same royal treatment.

So what ingredients should you look to avoid in skincare? Major chemicals of concern are phthalates, plastics that can be found in perfumes, hair products, skin lotions and nail polishes; parabens, that are known endocrine disruptors, which means they have the potential to lead to hormonal imbalances and other serious health concerns; sodium laurel sulfates and sodium laureth sulfates (SLS/SLES) that can be found in products that create foam, like toothpaste, shampoos and body wash; and toulene, which is a chemical found in nail polish and hair dyes, and has been believed to be toxic to the immune system, even having the potential to cause birth defects in unborn children.

 

4. More Effective Results

Yep, natural skincare products can provide significant improvements to the condition of your skin thanks to the naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Natural ingredients won’t include those harsh, toxic chemicals that can cause dry skin, premature aging, sensitivity and other issues. Some people with sensitive skin can still experience issues with natural ingredients, but the potential for this occurring is about 0.1%.

Getting rid of all the unnecessary chemicals and toxicities allows the really effective ingredients to shine through, meaning you’ll need less in the long run because - surprise, surprise - your skin will actually get better! What does it mean to become Vegan?

You may have been hearing more and more about the vegan movement over the past 12 months due to an increasing interest in this way of life. But what does it actually mean to be vegan?

The word vegan refers to people who consume no animal meat or by-products (such as eggs or dairy) and avoid any animal derived clothing, accessories, skincare and more. The word vegan was initially used in 1944 by Donald Watson who was a non-dairy vegetarian and settled on the first three letters and last two letters of vegetarian – ‘vegan’, to separate this way of life from vegetarianism.  

Below are some of the common food or products that Vegans avoid:

  • All animal meat – red meat, poultry, seafood, game meat etc
  • All animal by-products – dairy, eggs, lanolin (oil from sheep’s wool), honey, caviar, beeswax, whey protein powder
  • All animal skins – leather, fur, reptile skin, feathers, wool
  • Animal derived products – goose down jackets/bedding, sheep skin ugg boots, silk clothing/bedding, pearls, ivory, feathered accessories, goat’s milk skincare, makeup that contains animal product like carmine.
  • Animals for entertainment/experimentation – circus’ with animal acts, zoos, sea life parks, travelling animal acts, purchasing of exotic animals as pets, animal testing, factory farm pet breeding, rodeos, horse/dog racing.

This list is not extensive, however it gives you an overview of the ways in which animals are used and exploited for the human population and how adopting a vegan lifestyle can aid in reducing the harm, torture and pain that comes to these animals.

So why do people become vegan? People can decide to become vegan for several reasons, but there are three common themes for why people make this lifestyle switch.

  • One reason is to prevent animal cruelty and the exploitation of animals for food consumption and other general living needs. Every year, 56 billion farm animals are culled for their meat and this doesn’t include seafood and the many millions more that are culled or abused for their eggs, milk, skin, fur, feathers and more. By switching to a vegan lifestyle, each person can save up to 198 animals from being bred for food or accessories each year, which equates to around 1.4 billion animals per year in America alone that aren't bred for human benefit.
  • Another reason for becoming vegan is the environmental impact. The impact that large scale animal agriculture and fishing is having on our climate, oceans and land is now being well documented. The land required to grow grains to feed the livestock industry is responsible for the destruction of many of our rain forests. Imagine what could be achieved with livestock land if the demand for meat was simply not there? The methane and carbon dioxide emissions from the livestock industry is also higher than all of the car and transport emissions put together. These emissions are impacting our atmosphere and leading to climate change issues. Instead of switching to water saving shower heads or riding to work, you could eat vegan for two nights a week and have a larger impact. By adopting a vegan lifestyle, a more sustainable approach to living and land use can be achieved.
  • A third reason for becoming vegan is for health reasons. There is well documented evidence of the benefits of adopting a plant based diet for overall well being. A plant based diet reduces the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular issues, and is linked to longevity in countries who eat a mostly plant based diet. A plant based diet involves eating vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes and nuts without processed food or excessive oil.

Vegans may relate to one or more of the above reasons, or may have additional reasons for their lifestyle choice. However, the commonalities of vegans are the choices they make to avoid animal derived food & products and the exploitation of animals.
