How to beat the back to work blues


There’s nothing better than the Christmas break. A time spent with family, friends, sunshine, swimming, delicious food, even tastier drinks and a whole lot of fun. But when you have such a great holiday, how can you even face going back to work afterwards? This is known as the back to work blues, and it’s incredibly common. So if you’re struggling to get back down to business, here are my top five tips.


  1. Go Slow

It might be tempting to dive straight into work and start ploughing through all the unread emails and missed phone calls, but for the first week or so, aim to take it slow. Going from the easygoing pace of a holiday straight back to the hustle and bustle can make you feel burned out much quicker. Instead, take the opportunity to ease into your workflow by pacing yourself. Allow some time for quick five minute breaks throughout the work day, enjoy catching up with your colleagues, and don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get everything done straight away.


  1. Reset Your Rhythm

Your internal body clock can tend to take over while you’re on holidays, and resetting that circadian rhythm can be tricky. Waking up without an alarm is such a freeing feeling, but unfortunately it can alter your usual sleep patterns, making it even more difficult to get up on that first day of work. So to realign your body clock, there are several things you can do to make that first week back a bit easier. Set a regular wake and sleep time, and encourage as much natural light as possible by opening your blinds as soon as your alarm goes off. Avoid caffeine at night as that will only keep you awake, and don’t feel guilty if you want to have a quick cat-nap throughout the day!


  1. Set Some Goals

The new year is a great time to reflect on your progress in all aspects of life, and put some goals in place to achieve what you’re aiming for in the year ahead. Whether you want to learn a new language, start up a new business, make new friends, write a novel, change careers, move house, achieve a promotion or get fitter and healthier, setting goals is a great way to help you feel excited about getting back into the grind. There are plenty of helpful ways you can set achievable goals, so whether you write them down and pin them to your wall or post about your progress on your Instagram page, focusing on a new project is a great way to feel alive and invigorated.


  1. Be Healthy

After the indulgence of the silly season you might be feeling quite sluggish and unhealthy, which can be a really unmotivating way to start the new year. So focus on getting your health back on track by eating nourishing, wholesome foods and fresh produce, drinking lots of water and easing back into an exercise routine. Do a cleanse as well – for your pantry. Get rid of all the leftover junk foods and tempting holiday treats you might have lying around the house to avoid falling off the food wagon.


  1. Stay Positive

Remember that any blues you might be feeling after a holiday are normal, and will pass. While it might seem difficult to look on the bright side when you’re feeling so down, it’s a known fact that positivity attracts positivity. So smile as much as you can (even if you have to fake it), and do things that make you happy, like getting a massage, freshening up your hair colour or taking a nice warm bath and scrubbing up with one of my natural body scrubs. Get excited about the fact that a new year is ahead of you, and you have every opportunity to make it an amazing one!
